Nitrate Levels and Water Usage

Click the document icon below to see the monthly measured nitrate and water usage data. The recommended human maximum for nitrates is 10.0 mg/L.  Members are notified by email when the limit is exceeded. Water usage data was not always available in a usable form until a few months ago, but will be documented consistently in the future.

Nitrate Update

Our nitrate levels continue to hover around the recommended limit but often slightly exceed the guideline. The Board continues to seek a long term solution but no "affordable" one has been found.

Lead Line Inventory

In 2024, the State of California required us to report on the material used in each homesite's service line bringing water from the main line on the street to the edge of the dwelling. The intention is to identify service lines made of lead so they can be replaced.  We used many methods to complete the survey but we could not get data for many homes.  That might mean that the homeowner didn't know the material used in their line or it might mean they were not able to be reached or the service line junction could not be found to be inspected (a very common situation in our system).

Many homes were reported with "unknown" service line material and the state requires us to post a notification of the addresses with this status and also send the homeowner a notification.  We have found no evidence of any lead pipes in use in our system.  This list is posted to adhere to state requirements.

Understanding Nitrates

The water we pump has naturally occurring nitrates which occasionally exceed government guidelines for safety. We currently have 4 wells in operation, each with different levels of nitrates. We reduce the amount of water pumped from the high-nitrate wells to end up with a nitrate level below the recommended limit. Nitrate levels in each well change unpredictably, occasionally exceeding the guideline, so the blend must be adjusted at those times.  We are exploring long-term solutions like drilling another well in a different location or filtering the water at each homesite.  Filtering at the well level is prohibitavely difficult and expensive.
